You’re typing away on your laptop when all of a sudden, it decides to crash. When you pull the document back up, you’re horrified to realize that you’ve lost hours of work. While nothing can bring your document back, there are ways to stop this problem from happening in the future.

You can try turning the computer on and off again. You could open your computer in safe mode and try to narrow down the problem that way. If none of this works, don’t worry.

There are a million and one ways to fix MacBook problems. Check out this handy repair guide to learn about all your options.

Startup Problems

You’ve pressed the power button to start your computer up for a long day at work. When you do, you’re met with a gray screen. No matter how many times you try to turn the device off and back on, you can’t get this screen to go away.

You can fix MacBook Pro problems of this nature by turning it on in safe mode. This will boot your computer up by using as little of your software as possible. While your laptop is in this mode, it will check your start-up disk and repair any issues.

To open safe mode, press the power button and hold down the shift key. When the Apple logo appears and disappears, you can let the key go. Give your computer a few moments to run the diagnosis, and then you can restart it like normal.

Your Mac Won’t Charge

You’re working when all of a sudden, your computer turns off. The last time you checked, your battery was on 77%. There’s no reason why it should have died.

How to fix MacBook charger? hold down the power button to turn it off. Turn it back on and allow your computer to load up. Once it does, restart the computer a second time.

Allowing the device to have a healthy shutdown might be enough to fix the charging problem. If it doesn’t work, reset your System Management Controller.

It’s the program on your computer that’s in charge of sleep mode, charging, and more. So, resetting it might fix any battery issues.

The FaceTime Camera Isn’t Working Well

MacBook Air models have this issue where the FaceTime camera is so granulated, that using the program isn’t worth it. The first step to fixing it is to make sure that your camera is working across all your other programs.

If it is, then the issue is with FaceTime. All you can do is to check and see if the program needs any updates.

If the camera doesn’t seem to function whatsoever, you can go to https://setapp.com/how-to/fix-camera-on-mac-not-working to learn what to do.

Login Items

If you turn on your computer and see a blue screen, one of your start-up programs might be the culprit. The good news is that it’s not too hard to fix MacBook screen problems. It’s all a matter of playing an elimination game.

Go to your system preferences and click on “Users & Groups.” On the left, you’ll see your user name. Select it and click on the Login Items tab.

Highlight a program and click the minus button to delete it. If that it turns out that the deleted program wasn’t the issue, you can put it back by pressing the plus button.

Slow Working Apps

You’ve been trying to get things done on your computer all afternoon, but you can’t get your apps to respond. Not sure how to fix a slow MacBook Pro?

Click on the Apple icon on the left side of your screen to bring up the Force Quit menu. This will bring up a list of programs that you can exit out of.

You Can’t Connect Your External Devices

You can use external devices to store access data on your Mac if it will work. If it doesn’t, try plugging it into a different computer. If it works, that means that the issue is with your Mac.

Next, make sure that your Mac ports aren’t damaged. If everything seems fine on that end, restart the computer and the external device.

Did that still not accomplish anything? Do a little Google-fu to find out if your external device is compatible with your laptop.

Spinning Color Wheel of Death

When your computer is struggling to work, it will display a spinning rainbow wheel. Go to the Activity Monitor and click on the Memory tab.

This will show you how much processing power each of your apps is using up. From this menu, you can force quit any programs that are putting a heavy load on the computer.

The Screen is Flickering

Is your laptop screen starting to flicker on and off? You’ll still be able to see the things on your screen, but not well enough to actually get anything done.

If the flickering isn’t that bad, you might be able to fix it by resetting your NVRAM. Check your computer for any updates.

Firefox tends to cause flickering screens on MacBook. If you disable or delete it, that might solve your issue. If none of this works, open the computer in safe mode to try, and pinpoint a different issue.

How to Fix MacBook Problems When Your Computer is Down and Out
