Terraria 1.4 is a video game that requires its players to carry out explorations alone or with their friends in randomly generated worlds. It is available on the Steam platform.
While this game is interesting, it is not without its frustrations. And one of its most frustrating occurrences is the “Terraria lost connection error”. This error mostly rears its ugly head after users update their games. So far, it seems to be peculiar to players on the Windows platform as other platform users are yet to report encountering such a problem.
Another time when you can encounter this problem is when you try to connect your game with others to enable multiplayer mode.
How to Fix Terraria Lost Connection Error
There are a number of methods you can employ to fix this issue and we discuss them below. However, before we proceed, you should know that, more often than not, the culprit of this error is a version mismatch. When you are trying to connect your game to another user’s and the versions do not match, you will almost certainly encounter a connection lost error.
Because of this, ensure your game and your friend’s game are of the same version. The best way to do this is to update them to the latest available version.
Verify the Integrity of Game Files
Once you have ensured the two games are of the same version, the next thing to do is to confirm the integrity of their installation files. You can do this through Steam.
Verifying the game files’ integrity will enable you to confirm if any of the file is missing or corrupted. To do this, strictly adhere to the following:
- Launch Steam and navigate to your library.
- Locate the Terraria folder and right-click on it.
- Click on Properties.
- Head to the Local Files tab and select the option, “Verify Integrity of Game Files.”
This will cause the software to go through a process of double-checking whether all the game files are present, functional, and up-to-date with the latest version. Once this verification process is complete, you will receive a notification to reacquire a missing or damaged file if there is a problem.
When this is done, relaunch Steam. Then, relaunch Terraria and try to connect the games to confirm whether the error has been resolved or not. This should be done by both parties.
Create a Journey Character
If you want to be a part of another player’s Journey Mode game, you first have to create a Journey Mode character for yourself. This is because not having a Journey character and attempting to be a part of the Journey Mode of another player will cause this error.
Once you have created your character, select the Journey option. After this, proceed with the game.
Reinstall the Game
It is also possible that your game files got corrupted or missing during the update process. To remedy this, simply uninstall and reinstall the game. To do this:
- Launch Steam and navigate to your Library.
- Locate the Terraria folder and right-click on it.
- Click on Manage and select Uninstall – keep in mind that this process will take a while.
- Reboot your computer.
- Finally, relaunch the Steam client and reinstall Terraria.
By now, you should have resolved the Terraria lost connection error. You can now enjoy your game in whichever mode you so choose. Have fun!
