Voyager Linux is a Xubuntu Linux distribution that brings the best out of the XFCE desktop environment. It comes with many unique features not found in other XFCE distributions, such as the Avant Window Navigator, Conky, and others.

Aside from the XFCE edition of Voyager, they also offer other versions, like Gnome, and others. As of now, Voyager Linux is built upon Ubuntu. However, there is also a Debian-based release for those who are not fans of Ubuntu.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to set up Voyager Linux. However, before we begin, be sure that you have a 2 GB USB flash drive, a computer with at least 1 GB of RAM and two CPU cores.

Downloading Voyager Linux

The only way to install Voyager Linux is to download the ISO release of the operating system from the internet. Luckily, Voyager Linux is hosted on SourceForge, so the download speeds are very fast.

To get your hands on the latest Voyager Linux ISO file, follow the step-by-step instructions below.

Step 1: Head over to the Voyager Linux website. Once on the official site, you will notice several menu options on the side. Locate the download icon and click on it. Selecting this icon will take you to the Voyager Linux SourceForge page.

Step 2: On the Voyager Linux SourceForge page, there are several different download options available. Everything from Voyager Debian, to older Voyager Ubuntu, spins. However, in this guide, we will focus on Voyager XE.

Locate Voyager-XE-20.04-beta-LTS-amd64.iso and click on it to start the download. Alternatively, if Voyager XE 20.04 is out of beta, download that instead.

Step 3: Let Voyager-XE-20.04-beta-LTS-amd64.iso download to your computer. It will take quite a bit of time, as ISO files tend to be more than a few gigabytes in size.

When the download process is complete, you will have successfully downloaded the latest Voyager Linux release to your system. Move on to the next section of the guide to continue!

Creating the Voyager Linux live USB

Installing Voyager Linux means creating a live USB. There are several different ways to create a live USB. However, by far, the easiest way to go is by making use of Etcher, a disk imaging tool by the company Balena.

The reason we’re using Etcher in this guide? It is a cross-platform tool. So, no matter what operating system you choose to make your Voyager Linux live USB on, the process is the same.

Download the Etcher tool to your Linux, Mac, or Windows computer. Then, go through the process of installing it on the system. Once it is installed, open it up and follow the step-by-step instructions below to make your Voyager Linux live USB.

Step 1: In the Etcher application, locate the “Select image” button, and click on it with the mouse. By clicking “Select image,” a pop-up window will appear. Use it to browse for the Voyager XE 20.04 ISO that was downloaded earlier.

Step 2: Plug in the USB flash drive to the USB port on your computer.

Step 3: Locate the “Select drive” button and click on it with the mouse. Upon selecting the “Select drive” button, a UI will appear. Use this UI to select your drive.

Step 4: Click the “Flash!” button to start the creation process! When everything is done, configure your computer’s BIOS to boot from USB and move on to the next section of the guide.

Installing Voyager Linux

To install Voyager Linux, ensure that you’ve fully booted into the live USB. Then, follow the step-by-step instructions outlined below to get Voyager set up.

Step 1: Locate the icon on the desktop that says, “Install Xubuntu 20.04 LTS” and click on it with the mouse. Selecting this option will bring up the Voyager Linux installation tool.

Step 2: Read the welcome screen. Then, locate the “Continue” button and click it to move to the next page.

Step 3: Select your keyboard layout on the “Keyboard layout” page if Voyager Linux does not select it for you automatically. Then, click on the “Continue” button to move to the next page.

Step 4: Select the “Download updates while installing Xubuntu.” Also, select “Install third-party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats.”

Click on “Continue” to move to the next page.

Step 5: On the “Installation type” page, select the installation type that fits best for you. Do not choose the “Something else” option unless you are a Linux expert and understand how to set up a system by hand.

Select “Install Now” to move to the next page.

Step 6: Using the on-screen map, select your time zone. Then, click on “Continue” to move to the next page.

Step 7: Using the UI, set up a username, password, and hostname for your new Voyager Linux PC. Then, select the “Continue” button to move on to the next page.

Let the Voyager Linux installer set up the system. When the process is complete, click the “reboot” button that appears on the screen to restart. When the reboot is complete, you’ll be ready to use your new Voyager Linux installation!
