Is Windows Security Secure Enough Nowadays?

Windows has always been the king of operating systems. But now, Windows 10 is being criticized for its poor security. Is Microsoft really taking security seriously or is it just another marketing ploy?

Microsoft has been struggling to regain customers’ trust after several high-profile data breaches. The company recently announced plans to improve Windows 10’s privacy settings. In addition, they’ve also introduced new features such as ‘privacy mode’, which allows users to limit their personal information from being shared with third parties.

While Windows 10 is certainly better than previous versions, it still isn’t perfect. If you want to ensure your computer remains safe, then you should consider using a virtual private network (VPN). This way, you’ll be able to browse the web securely without worrying about hackers gaining access to your sensitive information.

What is Windows VPN and why do I need it?

A Virtual Private Network gives you complete control over what you share online. By encrypting all internet traffic on your local network, Windows VPN will protect your identity by stopping other people from snooping in on your browsing history and email activity. With this type of protection, you can surf the internet privately and confidently whether at home or work.

Windows VPN automatically configures itself when you install the software but we recommend that you set up an account so that you can configure further options like connection and location preferences.

You don’t have to know how to use a VPN service, however, if you’re not sure where to start there are plenty of free resources online including videos and articles to help you get going.

How Windows security works

When you open up your browser, the system sends requests via the internet to websites asking them to send back content. These requests are encrypted so no one else can see what sites you visit. When you’re finished visiting, you close down the browser window and everything is stored locally on your computer until you delete it.

On Windows computers, this process is called Internet Connection Sharing. It was designed to allow two or more computers to connect together through the same router or modem. However, since modern routers are capable of handling multiple connections, it’s possible to use them for much more.

Internet Connection Sharing works by having each individual machine act as a client of the service instead of connecting directly to the internet. While this might seem counterintuitive, keep in mind that any device connected to the internet is potentially vulnerable to attack. So, by keeping the connection between the devices inside a firewall, only authorized devices can communicate with the internet.

In order for you to make Internet Connection Sharing work, you’ll first need to download a program called Shared Access Signature (SAS) Gateway. SAS Gateway runs on both PC and Mac platforms. Once installed, you’ll need to register your device before you can begin sharing your internet connection.

Once you’ve registered, you’re ready to go! You can either log into your own account or create a guest account to enjoy the benefits of your free trial subscription. After installation, you’ll find Internet Connection Sharing under the “Network & Internet” section of Settings. Click on the dropdown arrow next to the option and select “Create new Shared Access Signature (Sas) gateway profile…” In the following dialog box, enter a name for your shared connection and select the appropriate authentication method. Lastly, click OK to save your settings and start sharing your internet connection.

What measures could be taken to make your Windows more secure?

There are many measures that you can take to ensure your Windows is secured. Right here are reliable options to use if you want to improve the safety of your PC or laptop. We’ve compiled a list of ways you can protect yourself against malware and other threats:

  • Use antivirus programs – If you use Windows 7, 8, 10, XP, Vista, or whatever edition of Windows you may currently be running, then you should definitely consider using an Antivirus program. There are several different types of AVs out there today. Some are very powerful, while others are simply meant to provide basic protection against viruses and malware. The most popular brands include Avira, Bitdefender, ESET, McAfee, Norton, Panda Security, Sophos, Trend Micro, and Kaspersky. And of course, there are dozens of other companies providing security products.
  • Keep your operating systems and applications updated – Many people rely on their PCs to do a lot of things. They use them for banking, shopping, emailing, social media, and even gaming. As a result, they often have a number of third-party apps installed. Most of these apps will update themselves automatically without your input. However, some of these apps also require you to manually check for updates every now and again. This is especially true if you’re using pirated software. Of course, if you don’t have anti-virus software, you’ll need to manually install updates. But, if you do have a good antivirus solution, then you won’t need to worry about updating anything. Your AV solution will handle all the necessary tasks for you.
  • Run your OS in Safe Mode – If you’re experiencing problems with your system, it’s always best to boot up in safe mode. This way you can safely diagnose issues without causing damage. To do so, press F8 when you see the splash screen at startup. From there, navigate through the menus until you reach Safe Mode. When prompted, choose “Safe Mode with Networking” from the list. Note that this is not a live network environment. It simulates one by utilizing a virtual hard drive. Once booted into safe mode, run a full virus scan on your computer.
  • Remove unnecessary files/folders – A cluttered desktop tends to increase the risk of malware getting onto your PC. If you aren’t sure what file(s) contain malware, just delete everything you don’t recognize. This can help prevent unwanted software from being downloaded to your device.
  • Disable autorun – Autoruns will launch programs whenever you insert removable drives such as CDs, DVDs, USB devices, etc. Even though it sounds like a great idea, it actually increases your chances of having malware get onto your machine.

Plus, the programs that autorun launches usually come bundled with adware, spyware, and other questionable software. Uncheck Run programs found in removable media.

Conclusion

The purpose of this guide was to provide users with general tips and guidance regarding how they can improve their Windows security. While there are many methods available to boost your PC’s security, the best thing you can do is educate yourself on what threats exist today and implement the steps outlined above accordingly.
